Let’s get a little background on my current health situation, I am twenty-two years old and at eighteen I was told I had hypothyroidism. Hypothyroidism effects your thyroid gland located in the lower front of the neck. The thyroid’s job is to make hormones to release into the blood and then carried to every tissue in the body. These hormones help the body use energy, stay warm and keep the brain, heart, muscles, and other organs working like they should. This disease has caused me so many problems, and has not only effected my physical health but my mental health. Hypothyroidism effects many parts of my daily life including; uncontrollable tiredness, depression and mood swings, extreme dry skin, hair loss, weight grain, inability to lose weight, and basically having a metabolism that does not work and can not release certain hormones into my body. It’s frustrating at times and if I don’t make it a priority every single day I can lose control of it and I won’t function normally. It makes me feel as if I can’t enjoy my life as easy as it should be. Which brings me to my next point, where I’m currently at in life has lead me to this decision for becoming vegan.
I am currently at the worst state of my well-being I have ever been. I have lost track of taking my daily medication, I have no motivation, I’ve been gaining weight, and have been creeping into depression each day about my declining health. It’s certainly a hard realization being told I need to take medication for the rest of my life just to feel normal, because my brain doesn’t receive signals to us understand what being full feels like, to know what hunger feels like. I have a hard time controlling my eating unless I’m on medication. I want to be able to have a manageable weight and feel confident about my body. I want to feel healthy, I want to feel beautiful. I’m already going to the doctors every three months for blood work and checkups like I’m eighty years old, I’m twenty-two! There has to be more answers to this other than just taking some pills everyday, but my doctor has never went into any details about what I can do on my part, such as a healthy diet. Now I’m taking matters into my own hands. I’ll find my own answers, and host my experiments to help myself.
I DO NOT WANT TO TAKE MEDICATION FOR MY ENTIRE LIFE!
Let’s just clear the air before I start this section, no I’m not becoming vegan because I watched a couple documentaries, or because it’s trendy. Let’s be honest though, after watching some food documentaries on Netflix, I learned so many beneficial ideas about how to reverse illnesses. Some of my absolute favorite documentaries that you should definitely check out if you are considering going vegan or if you simply just want to learn more about healthy diet and our food industry are; Food Matters, What The Health, Food Inc., and Forks over Knives. These documentaries were a huge eye openers for my husband and I! After learning that people have cured their diabetes, heart disease and even their thyroid issues just by having a plant based diet, really got me to thinking. If they can do it, why can’t I? I mean what would be the harm in me just trying this out, best case scenario I cure my disease; worst case scenario I forced myself to eat vegetables? I mean the odds aren’t very risky…. lol.
The best way to start anything is just dive right in, so that’s exactly what I’m going to do. If I sit here and ponder this idea for too long I will just end up not going through with it. Along with some help from a vegan friend of mine, other bloggers, and Pinterest. I’ll be slowly learning and tweaking my diet along the way. September 1st, 2017 is the beginning of this journey. I’ll be heading to the doctor right before the start date to find out my thyroid levels and record my health check-up. This is so I can return in three months to see how going vegan effected my health and thyroid levels. I am beyond excited to conduct this experiment on myself. I hope you all follow me on this new health related journey I’m about to embark on! I aim to inspire and help others with their nutrition and diet goals with this vegan series!
I refuse to allow my health condition to define me. Veganism, my route to freedom.
